Devonport Council Trials Smart Lock Hire at Pioneer Park
In a Tasmanian first, Devonport Council has partnered with Smart Lock Booking to trial Smart Lock Hire at Pioneer Park, offering secure after-hours access to public toilets through a streamlined, app-free solution.
Smart Lock Hire is a lightweight access system designed for temporary use and short-term space hire. Leveraging App Clip and Instant App technology, the system allows users to unlock facilities directly from their phone—without downloading a full app. Access is verified using one-time passcodes (OTP) linked to a mobile number, ensuring every unlock is secure, traceable, and accountable.
“This is exactly the kind of use case Smart Lock Hire was built for. Devonport Council is leading the way in offering smarter, more flexible access to public infrastructure—while maintaining high standards of safety and accountability.”
- Darren Alexander, CEO of Smart Lock Booking.
The trial at Pioneer Park aims to reduce vandalism and misuse of public toilets, especially during evening hours. By linking each unlock to a verified user, Council gains better visibility and control without compromising public convenience.
If successful, the trial may expand to additional public facilities across the region, paving the way for a smarter, more secure future for shared infrastructure.
